Educational Credentials Review

The Educational Credentials Review is an evaluation that determines whether the applicant’s education is substantially equivalent to the first professional degree of a graduate of a U.S. physical therapy (PT) degree program that has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

To ensure accuracy and fairness, FCCPT uses the Coursework Evaluation Tool (CWT), which has been validated against the CAPTE criteria for PT education.

What does the Educational Credentials Review include?

A comparison of the educational records provided by the applicant’s educational institutions to the current educational requirements for a first professional PT degree in the U.S.

Who should apply for the Educational Credentials Review?

  • If you are planning to reside in one U.S. jurisdiction and are seeking a license to work as a physical therapist in that jurisdiction; or
  • If you are allowed to use the review for admissions requirements for some U.S. educational programs; or

Important: You should not apply for the Educational Credentials Review if:

  • You are not a graduate of a physical therapy education program, holding a degree in physical therapy; or
  • You need a visa screening and Health Care Worker Certificate; or
  • You are applying to a jurisdiction that requires Type 1 Certification. Refer to the Comprehensive Credentials Review (Type 1 Review) section of our website for a current listing of jurisdictions that require the Type 1 Certification.  Or

FCCPT Do's and Don'ts

What FCCPT does:

  • FCCPT collects and verifies all documents upon receipt.
    • FCCPT may contact academic institutions and/or licensing/registration agencies if further verification of documents is needed.
    • If all documents are not received within twelve (12) months of the application date, FCCPT will close the service. Please see Reactivation section of the website for more information.
  • FCCPT sends original language documents to you (the applicant) once the documents are verified, with instructions on how to arrange for translations.

    • If additional documents arrive after the review begins, you must send a signed fax requesting to restart the current review. The fax must be received by FCCPT prior to the completion of the review. If you do not send a fax requesting to restart the review, FCCPT will complete the review with the documents received on or before the review start date and you must apply for Re-evaluation to add the new information to your evaluation report.

  • FCCPT issues evaluation reports via e-mail. The final reports are secure .pdf documents that can only be accessed by the applicant, jurisdiction, or recipient to whom the email was delivered.
